Nigeria Women’s Cricket Team Edges Uganda by 5 Runs in Thrilling Kwibuka Tournament Clash

In a gripping low-scoring encounter at the Kwibuka Women’s T20I Tournament held at the Gahanga International Cricket Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda, Nigeria’s senior women’s cricket team secured a dramatic 5-run victory over defending champions Uganda on June 11, 2025. The win ended Uganda’s six-match winning streak in the tournament and showcased Nigeria’s resilience and tactical discipline under pressure.

Batting first, Nigeria posted a modest total of 73 for 9 in their 20 overs, with top-order batter Kehinde Amusa contributing a steady 33 runs off 54 balls. Support from Salome Sunday, who scored 14 runs, was crucial as the rest of the batting lineup struggled to build momentum. The target appeared easily chaseable on paper, but Nigeria’s bowlers rose to the occasion in a tense finish.

Uganda’s chase faltered in the final overs as Nigerian bowlers tightened their grip. With just 6 runs needed off the last 12 balls and four wickets in hand, Uganda seemed poised for victory. However, Lilian Ude delivered a sensational maiden over, slowing the scoring rate, and Anointed Akhigbe produced a remarkable final over, taking three quick wickets to bowl Uganda out for 68.

Nigerian captain Favour Eseigbe praised her team’s focus and execution, highlighting their commitment to the game plan despite the low total and mounting pressure. Ugandan captain Janet Mbabazi acknowledged Nigeria’s fighting spirit and expressed confidence that Uganda would come back stronger.

The Kwibuka Tournament, now in its 11th edition, honors the victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda and features nine participating teams. Nigeria’s victory over Uganda is a significant boost for their campaign and a testament to their growing competitiveness in African women’s cricket.
