Trump Calls Removing Russia from G7 a ‘Mistake’ as He Cuts Summit Short Amid Middle East Tensions

US President Donald Trump abruptly left the G7 summit in Canada on Monday, citing escalating tensions in the Middle East as the reason for his early departure. The White House confirmed that Trump’s return to Washington was prompted by the situation between Israel and Iran. However, Trump denied French President Emmanuel Macron’s claim that he left to propose a ceasefire, labeling Macron as “publicity seeking” and stating, “He has no clue why I am en route to Washington”.

During the summit, Trump criticized the 2014 expulsion of Russia from the then-G8, calling it a “mistake” and blaming former US President Barack Obama and Canadian leadership for the decision. He suggested that Russia’s removal contributed to the current conflict, asserting that Russian President Vladimir Putin “talks to me” but not to others who ousted him.

Trump’s early exit cut short planned bilateral meetings, including those with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Prior to leaving, he warned on social media that “everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran,” heightening concerns amid the Middle East crisis.

The G7 summit, held in the Canadian Rockies, was dominated by discussions on the Middle East conflict and tensions between Ukraine and Russia. Despite efforts to present a united front, divisions remain among member states regarding approaches to the Israel-Iran conflict. Trump’s departure and his outspoken comments underscore ongoing challenges in maintaining cohesion among the world’s leading democracies.
