Meta is rolling out three major monetization features for WhatsApp globally, marking the platform’s most significant shift yet towards enabling creators, businesses, and organizations to earn directly from their content. These new tools are focused within the Updates tab, which houses both Status and Channels, and are designed to generate revenue without interrupting users’ private chats or compromising WhatsApp’s core privacy values.
The three new features include:
1. Paid Channel Subscriptions: Users can now support their favorite creators, news outlets, or organizations by subscribing to exclusive content for a monthly fee. This offers creators and businesses a direct way to monetize their audience on WhatsApp.2. Promoted Channels: Channel admins can pay to boost their visibility, allowing their channels to be recommended to users based on interests within the channel directory. This tool is aimed at helping creators and businesses grow their reach.
3. Ads in Status: Businesses will be able to place targeted advertisements within the Status section (similar to Instagram Stories), enabling users to discover new products or services and initiate direct conversations with advertisers. These ads will only appear in the Updates tab, not in personal chats.
Meta has emphasized that these features are built with privacy in mind. All personal messages, calls, and group chats remain end-to-end encrypted, and no phone numbers or private message content will be shared with advertisers. Ad targeting will rely on limited data such as a user’s location, language, and interactions within the Updates tab. Users who link their WhatsApp to Meta’s Accounts Center may see ads based on their activity across Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
The rollout of these features will be gradual over the coming months, and Meta assures that users who use WhatsApp solely for personal messaging will not experience any changes in their core chat experience. The move is expected to significantly expand WhatsApp’s business model and open new revenue streams for millions of creators and businesses worldwide.
