A Catholic priest Rev. Fr. Angelo Chidi Unegbu has issued a strong warning to Nigerians against voting for Catholic priests seeking political office, citing the ongoing crisis in Benue State as a grim example of political failure. In a candid statement, Unegbu urged voters to reject any Catholic priest candidate, including himself if he ever contests, saying the Nigerian political system is so corrupt that even well-intentioned individuals would be compromised.
Reflecting on the tragedy in Benue, where over 200 innocent people were brutally killed many reportedly by Fulani herdsmen Unegbu criticized the state governor for organizing a grand welcome for President Bola Tinubu, whose administration he holds responsible for failing to protect citizens. He expressed deep disappointment that while survivors mourn the loss of dozens of family members, the governor appeared more focused on political pageantry than genuine mourning or action.
Fr. Unegbu’s remarks highlight widespread frustration with political leadership in Nigeria, especially regarding security and governance failures. He called for a “return to factory settings,” urging Nigerians to rethink their political choices and demand accountability from leaders who prioritize power over the welfare of the people.
The statement resonates amid growing calls for political reform and justice for victims of violence in Benue and other troubled regions across Nigeria.
