The Edo State government has responded to widespread criticism following Governor Monday Okpebholo’s statement that Peter Obi, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, must obtain clearance before visiting Edo State. In a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the government emphasized that Okpebholo’s directive was a security protocol, not a travel ban or threat against Obi. The statement clarified that, unlike Peter Obi who, as Anambra Governor detained Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai during a visit Okpebholo is committed to security and order.
The government stressed that the directive aims to safeguard all residents amid rising attacks and kidnappings of religious leaders, urging that high-profile visitors notify the state beforehand to enable appropriate security arrangements.
Itua added that the Governor’s warnings should not be politicized, insisting Edo remains open to all Nigerians who respect security protocols.
Edo APC Publicity Secretary Barrister Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie echoed this, saying no right, including movement, is absolute when public safety is at stake. He condemned claims that Okpebholo banned Obi’s visit as false and reaffirmed that security clearance ensures order during politically sensitive visits.
The statement highlights the Governor’s responsibility as Chief Security Officer and his commitment to peaceful governance and inclusive security.
