Buhari’s Endorsement No Longer Decides Elections – Salihu Lukman | Daily Mentor

Era of Winning Elections in Northern Nigeria Solely on Buhari’s Endorsement Is Over, Says Salihu Lukman

Mallam Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and now a chieftain of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, declared that the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari marks the end of a political era in which Buhari’s endorsement guaranteed electoral victory in the North.

Speaking on Arise Television, Lukman emphasized that even prior to Buhari’s passing, his influence in determining election outcomes had waned. He highlighted how Buhari’s backing previously served as an almost automatic ticket to victory in many Northern constituencies, a phenomenon that contributed to political complacency among candidates.

Lukman urged leaders within the ADC coalition to embrace humility, unity, and teamwork, acknowledging that no single figure now possesses Buhari’s commanding political clout. He called for a collective focus on building a strong political platform capable not only of defeating the ruling APC but also of addressing Nigerians’ pressing socio-economic challenges.

“What we must learn, especially within the coalition, is that we no longer have someone with the intimidating profile of late President Buhari. That means all coalition leaders must recognize their dependence on each other and foster strong teamwork,” Lukman said.

He stressed that future electoral success will depend on politicians engaging sincerely with citizens, listening to their concerns, and fulfilling campaign promises rather than relying on endorsements from powerful individuals.

Buhari’s death and subsequent burial on Tuesday have ushered in an uncertain new political chapter ahead of the 2027 elections, raising questions about leadership dynamics within the North and the broader Nigerian political landscape.

Lukman’s comments underscore the shifting political environment where candidates can no longer count solely on Buhari’s legacy but must appeal directly to voters and demonstrate effective governance to succeed.
