The Ojora of Ijora and Iganmu Kingdom, Oba AbdulFatai Aromire Oyegbemi, has taken the unprecedented step of dethroning six traditional chiefs for attending the Labour Party’s campaign flag-off event in Apapa, Lagos State, without his prior knowledge or approval. The monarch accused the chiefs of impersonating him at the political gathering, a serious violation of palace protocol and their duties as his representatives.
The affected chiefs are Chief Lateef Ojora (Bale Alaba Oro), Chief Saliu Biliamin (Bale Alafia Dodoro), Chief Taiwo Hassan (Bale Oke Ira), Chief Idris Oladipupo Ojora (Bale Abule Kere), Chief Hakeem Oseni (Bale Mosafejo Amukoko), and Chief Sule Raji Balogun (Balogun of Abule Kere).
Following a palace meeting held on Monday, Oba Oyegbemi expressed deep disappointment, emphasizing that no chief should act or make decisions on his behalf without explicit consent. The monarch described their actions as unacceptable and detrimental to the unity and discipline within the kingdom’s leadership structure.
In a statement from the palace, the dethronement was framed as a firm measure to maintain order, coherence, and respect for traditional authority. The monarch also praised the current Lagos State government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for ongoing development initiatives in Ojora Land and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the administration’s efforts.
The palace underscored the importance of transparency and collaboration between traditional rulers and their chiefs, especially regarding political engagements. Oba Oyegbemi warned all chiefs under his domain to strictly adhere to palace protocols and uphold the dignity of their offices.
This decisive action highlights the tension between traditional institutions and political activities amid the buildup to the 2025 local government elections and the broader 2027 general elections in Nigeria. It also signals the monarch’s resolve to keep his kingdom politically neutral and disciplined while supporting governance and development.
