Samuel Ortom, former Governor of Benue State, has called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to expel members who are simultaneously aligning with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), underscoring a strict stance against dual party affiliation. His remarks come amid rising tensions within opposition ranks following the formation of a coalition led by ADC.
In a recent interview, Ortom directed the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) to take decisive disciplinary action against individuals maintaining ties with both parties. He emphasized, “You cannot be in PDP and another party. We have instructed for their expulsion. It’s not feasible to maintain dual party memberships. One must choose to remain in PDP if that is their preference”.
Although Ortom refrained from naming specific individuals, his comments reflect the growing friction in the opposition, with several prominent politicians including some from the PDP endorsing the ADC coalition while retaining their original party memberships. Notably, Ortom’s close associate, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, has faced scrutiny for supporting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) while still maintaining his PDP membership. Wike notably endorsed President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 elections and has indicated support for Tinubu’s reelection bid in 2027.
Ortom’s remarks signal a shift in the PDP’s tolerance for such inconsistencies. “Just today, I met someone advocating for a coalition,” Ortom noted, highlighting that some members are now returning to the PDP after flirting with the idea of a coalition.
This development underscores the PDP’s intent to enforce party discipline and maintain its identity as Nigeria’s foremost opposition party, especially as the 2027 general elections approach. The party leadership has repeatedly stated its opposition to any merger or coalition that would compromise its independence, insisting that members must demonstrate unwavering loyalty to the PDP or face expulsion.
