Famous Nigerian musician Davido appears to have confirmed his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, is planning to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2026 gubernatorial election. The rumors of Adeleke’s defection gained traction last month after Davido and the governor visited President Bola Tinubu at his Lagos residence for a private meeting.
Davido’s newly released single titled “From Umbrella to Broom” symbolizing a shift from PDP (whose symbol is an umbrella) to APC (whose symbol is a broom) is widely interpreted as an endorsement of the defection. In the song, Davido sings:
“New broom go sweep better. Ẹtan abẹla si ìjọba wa. From umbrella to the broom... Eyan marun, mefa, kilode ta n suffer. New broom go sweep better...”
The lyrics suggest that joining APC will bring positive change and progress to Osun State, addressing issues like poor electricity supply and youth migration.
Despite the rumors and Davido’s apparent confirmation, Governor Adeleke and the Osun PDP have repeatedly denied plans to defect, describing the claims as false and politically motivated. However, the song and the recent political activities have intensified speculation about Adeleke’s political future.
This development adds a new dimension to the evolving political landscape in Osun State as parties prepare for the crucial 2026 governorship election.
