Rangers Confirm Signing of Nigerian-Eligible Defender Emmanuel Fernandez on Four-Year Deal

Scottish Premiership giants Rangers FC have officially announced the signing of 23-year-old Nigerian-eligible defender Emmanuel Fernandez from English League One side Peterborough United. Fernandez, who made 42 appearances and scored five goals last season, has penned a four-year contract with the Light Blues ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

This marks Fernandez’s first opportunity to play in a top-tier league after progressing through lower-tier English clubs including Brentford, Gillingham, and Ramsgate. Born in England to Nigerian parents of Yoruba descent, Fernandez is eligible to represent Nigeria internationally and is considered a promising prospect for the Super Eagles.

Rangers head coach Russell Martin expressed enthusiasm about the signing, highlighting Fernandez’s physical presence, leadership qualities, and potential for growth within the club’s competitive environment. Fernandez will wear jersey number 37 and is expected to fill the defensive void left by veteran Nigerian defender Leon Balogun, who recently departed the club.

Fernandez’s standout performance against Premier League side Everton in the FA Cup third round last season drew interest from several European clubs, including teams in France and Germany, but Rangers secured his signature ahead of their rivals.

The club and fans alike are optimistic that Fernandez’s arrival will strengthen the defensive line and contribute to Rangers’ ambitions in domestic and European competitions.
