A major controversy has erupted within South Africa’s police leadership after KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and other senior officials of interfering in investigations into political assassinations to protect politically connected suspects. Mkhwanazi alleged that the Political Killings Task Team, which was making significant progress uncovering links between drug cartels, politicians, and law enforcement officers, was disbanded on instructions from Minister Mchunu.
