Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has declared his support for a southern candidate to occupy Nigeria’s presidency in 2027, insisting that the South should complete its eight-year tenure before power returns to the North. Speaking during a media interaction in Makurdi, Ortom reaffirmed his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and distanced himself from the opposition coalition reportedly backing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate.
Ortom emphasized that even if the PDP produces a candidate in 2027, that candidate must come from the South. He stated, “For me, I am not supporting a northern candidate.” While rejecting formal coalition politics, he left room for strategic partnerships where necessary.
He also commended President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, noting improvements in governance and the rule of law. Ortom reiterated his commitment to the PDP as a board member and party leader, underscoring his focus on strengthening the party ahead of the elections.
His stance highlights ongoing regional and political dynamics shaping Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race and reflects divisions within opposition ranks regarding candidate support.
