Fifteen-year-old Grace John Nkpa, a talented student from Aba, Abia State, has been selected as one of just three Nigerians to participate in the prestigious 2025 TechGirls International Exchange Program in the United States. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and hosted at Virginia Tech University, the program brings together young female STEM enthusiasts from 37 countries for three months of hands-on training, mentorship, and leadership development in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Grace, a student of Academic Planet School in Aba and an emerging role model for girls across Nigeria, was celebrated by Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, who personally hosted and honored her at a special meeting with government officials. Recognizing her achievement, Governor Otti provided $5,000 in support of her journey and urged Grace to remain a proud ambassador for Abia throughout the intensive workshop and mentorship program. He further encouraged her to share the knowledge gained with her peers upon returning to Nigeria to inspire others.
Grace hails from Abiriba in Ohafia Local Government Area and was selected from a highly competitive pool of over 250,000 applicants nationwide, underscoring her exceptional promise and dedication. In her remarks, Grace expressed gratitude for the opportunity and committed to making Abia proud. She also inspired young girls everywhere to dream boldly and pursue their goals, saying, “Don’t let anyone tell you it’s impossible. Dream big and go for it.”
The TechGirls program exemplifies global efforts to close the gender gap in STEM fields, and Grace’s participation highlights Nigeria’s rising young female leaders poised to make an impact in technology and innovation. With the support of Governor Otti and the Abia State government, Grace John Nkpa is set to inspire a generation of girls from her state and beyond as she embarks on this international stage.
