Suriname’s Parliament Elects Jennifer Geerlings-Simons as Country’s First Female President Amid Imminent Oil Boom

Suriname’s National Assembly has elected Jennifer Geerlings-Simons as the South American nation’s first woman president, marking a historic milestone as the country prepares for a transformative oil-driven economic boom. The 71-year-old physician and former parliamentary speaker secured the presidency unopposed following a coalition agreement among six parties that together hold a majority in the 51-seat legislature.

Geerlings-Simons, leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP), which won 18 seats in the May 25 parliamentary elections, was formally approved on July 6, 2025, and is set to be inaugurated on July 16. Her vice president will be Gregory Rusland, leader of the National Party of Suriname.

In her acceptance speech, Geerlings-Simons pledged to use her knowledge and strength to ensure that the country’s forthcoming oil wealth benefits all citizens, with special focus on youth empowerment and social inclusion. She acknowledged the weight of responsibility that comes with being the first female president and expressed determination to serve the nation effectively.

Suriname, a diverse former Dutch colony with a population of around 646,000, is on the cusp of significant economic growth driven by major offshore oil discoveries in the Guyana-Suriname basin. The GranMorgu project, led by TotalEnergies and Petronas, is expected to begin production by 2028, potentially increasing the country’s GDP more than tenfold in the coming years.

Geerlings-Simons succeeds President Chandrikapersad Santokhi, whose administration faced economic challenges and austerity measures amid restructuring efforts. The new government inherits the task of managing oil revenues responsibly to foster sustainable development and national unity.

Her election symbolizes both political stability through coalition governance and a historic step forward for gender representation in Suriname’s highest office, as the nation looks ahead to a promising yet complex future shaped by newfound natural resource wealth.
