Major Wildfire Near Marseille Forces Airport Closure and Evacuations

A rapidly spreading wildfire on the outskirts of Marseille has led to the closure of Marseille Provence Airport and prompted evacuations as thick smoke engulfs parts of the southern French city. The blaze, fueled by strong winds, broke out near Les Pennes-Mirabeau and quickly expanded, forcing the suspension of all flight operations at the airport and diverting several flights to neighboring airports.

Over 160 firefighters, supported by helicopters and numerous fire engines, are battling the fire, which has already consumed hundreds of hectares of land. Authorities have urged residents in affected neighborhoods, including the 16th arrondissement and surrounding areas, to stay indoors, close windows, and avoid outdoor activities. Some housing estates have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Marseille’s mayor, Benoit Payan, warned that the fire is dangerously close to the city and called for vigilance and cooperation with emergency services. The wildfire comes amid a period of heightened fire risk across southern France following a recent heatwave that left vegetation extremely dry.

The airport closure has caused significant disruption during the peak summer travel season, with officials closely monitoring the situation and providing regular updates as firefighters work to contain the blaze and protect the city.
