A catastrophic flood struck Enohia Itim in Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State on August 1, 2025, resulting in the confirmed deaths of 12 people. The flood also devastated over 800 farmlands, primarily a plantain plantation, causing significant agricultural losses.
Engr. Timothy Nwachi, Chairman of Afikpo Local Government, expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and assured that the local government will take all necessary measures to prevent future occurrences. He urged residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer grounds due to ongoing heavy rainfall that could lead to more flooding.
Hon. Francis Abani Okpani, Councillor representing Itim Ward, further revealed that, out of the 12 fatalities, only three bodies have been recovered while nine remain missing. Among the victims are three children.
The disaster aligns with earlier warnings by the Federal Ministry of Environment, which had identified Afikpo as a high-risk flood zone. Okpani emphasized the importance of incorporating climate change considerations into flood risk management plans. He also stressed the need for effective drainage systems and the clearing of waterways to prevent blockages that exacerbate flooding.
Together, local authorities pledged to collaborate with state and federal agencies to provide timely humanitarian aid and relief to those affected by the flood.
This severe flooding incident underscores the growing impact of climate change and inadequate infrastructure on vulnerable Nigerian communities.
