Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to immediately halt the ongoing harassment and prosecution of prominent activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore. The global human rights organization condemned the charges leveled against Sowore ranging from terrorism financing to money laundering and fraudulent activities as politically motivated efforts aimed at suppressing his peaceful exercise of fundamental human rights.
In a statement released following Sowore’s recent arraignment on fresh charges instituted by Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Amnesty International described the legal actions against him as baseless attempts to stifle dissent and curtail freedom of expression. The group expressed deep concern over investigations targeting Sowore’s and Sahara Reporters’ bank accounts, interpreting these probes as clear efforts to undermine independent media and civic space in Nigeria.
Sowore, who was declared an Amnesty International Prisoner of Conscience in November 2019, has experienced repeated arbitrary arrests, prolonged detentions, and other human rights violations solely due to his activism for human rights, social justice, and government accountability. Amnesty International also urged the Nigerian government to promptly investigate allegations of torture and ill-treatment Sowore reportedly endured while in police custody and to hold those responsible accountable through fair judicial processes.
The organization’s demand reflects ongoing international concern regarding Nigeria’s treatment of activists and media practitioners, calling for respect for democratic freedoms, transparency, and the rule of law.
