The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to create more than 1,600 direct and indirect jobs for the youths of Abuja through an extensive water supply project in the area councils of the FCT. The jobs will result from the provision of potable clean water across satellite towns by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Wike disclosed this during the flag-off ceremony for the construction and expansion of water supply infrastructure in Lot 1, Bwari Township, within Bwari Area Council on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. The project is part of a broader initiative to extend clean water beyond the city centre to the FCT’s satellite towns, including Bwari, Karu, Kubwa, Kuje, Kwali, Gwagwalada, and Abaji.
Recalling the administration's commitment since 2023, Wike emphasized that the President always fulfills his promises, noting that the water supply contract was originally scheduled for 18 months but has been extended to meet quality standards with assured funding.
The project’s phased approach aims to cover all six area councils of the FCT over the coming years, with the first phase covering Bwari and Karu already underway. The Minister explained, “By the time Mr. President’s four years expire, there will be clean treated water everywhere in the FCT.”
Beyond access to clean water, the project is expected to stimulate the local economy by generating approximately 1,600 jobs for young people in construction, maintenance, and water management, thus contributing to youth empowerment.
Wike assured the public that the projects embarked upon by his administration will not be abandoned, stating resolutely, “We start and we complete it.”
The Greater Abuja Water Supply Network, commissioned by President Tinubu in June 2025, significantly enhanced water provision across the capital with support from international partners, including the People's Republic of China. This new extension will further improve access for over 50 districts within the FCT, improving living standards and public health.
Wike’s assurance of completion and commitment to infrastructural development reiterates the administration’s policy focus on inclusive development and environmental sustainability, ensuring safe and reliable water is accessible to all FCT residents.
