Niger State House of Assembly Calls for Ban on Marker’s Day/Sign Out Ceremonies in Schools

The Niger State House of Assembly has passed a motion urging Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to enact an executive order prohibiting the observance of Marker’s Day (also known as Sign Out) ceremonies in all public and private secondary and tertiary institutions across the state. The motion was moved by Hon. Muhammad Sani Idris, representing the Tafa constituency.

Hon. Idris highlighted that although these ceremonies are intended to celebrate final-year students marking the end of their schooling, they have increasingly been associated with unruly behavior, misconduct, and immoral activities. Such negative trends, he argued, undermine the state’s educational goals of fostering intellectual and moral development among students.

The motion received unanimous support from the lawmakers. The Deputy Speaker, Hon. Afiniki Dauda, pledged to follow up with the governor and the State Ministry of Education to ensure swift enforcement of the ban.

This decision comes amid growing public concern over the disruptive and inappropriate conduct linked to these celebrations, seen by the Assembly as a threat to maintaining discipline and order in schools throughout Niger State.
