Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has alleged that Peter Obi desires to secure the PDP’s presidential ticket for 2027 without going through the primary election process.
Speaking on Nigeria Info FM 99.3 on Wednesday, Sowunmi claimed that the PDP owes the South-East, particularly the Igbo ethnic group, a debt because the party has allocated its presidential tickets to various tribes except the Igbos, who have demonstrated the capacity to lead.
He revealed that he had advised Obi months ago to return to the PDP, but accused Obi of being “too clever” and refusing to participate in the party’s primaries. Sowunmi warned that anyone avoiding primaries is looking for someone to cheat on their behalf, stressing that primaries represent the internal democracy of political parties.
He also expressed frustration over Obi’s management of the Labour Party and stated that Nigeria cannot indefinitely wait for Obi to become president. Sowunmi voiced hope that if Obi cannot rise to the presidency as an Igbo person, eventually another Igbo individual will emerge to occupy the position.
