Trump Meets Putin in Alaska, Shifts Focus from Ceasefire to Broader Peace Deal on Ukraine

U.S. President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, 2025, in a high-profile summit aimed at addressing the ongoing war in Ukraine. The meeting ended without a ceasefire agreement, surprising many observers who had expected Trump to push for an immediate halt to hostilities.

During the discussions, Trump abandoned his prior demand for a rapid ceasefire and instead expressed support for a more comprehensive peace agreement that would address the “root causes” of the conflict. Putin reiterated his longstanding position that any peace deal must include Ukraine ceding territory, limiting its military capabilities, and abandoning NATO aspirations.

Trump described the meeting as “a great and very successful day” and indicated plans to arrange a trilateral meeting involving himself, Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He suggested millions of lives could potentially be saved if such negotiations prove fruitful.

However, the summit drew sharp criticism from many Western leaders and analysts who saw Trump’s willingness to entertain Putin’s demands as conceding too much to Russia. Former NATO ambassador Ivo Daalder said Putin “outmaneuvered” Trump, allowing the Kremlin to continue military operations unhindered in Ukraine.

Following Trump’s meeting with Putin, Zelenskyy is scheduled to visit Washington for talks with Trump and European leaders, who will accompany Ukraine’s president to ensure a united front. The European delegation’s involvement signals concern that the U.S. might undercut allied efforts and pressure Ukraine into unfavorable concessions.

The Alaska summit reflects a complicated and polarized diplomatic landscape. Putin maintains that resolving the conflict requires addressing broader security tensions involving NATO and the U.S., while Ukraine and its allies reject demands that undermine Ukrainian sovereignty.

With fighting ongoing in eastern Ukraine and no ceasefire imminent, the world watches closely as these high-stakes negotiations unfold, hoping for a pathway to peace that respects Ukraine’s territorial integrity and security.
