Delta Government Sacks Health Workers for Illegally Charging Pregnant Women and Children for Drugs

The Delta State Government has dismissed and demoted several health workers found guilty of extorting money from pregnant women and children under five, violating the state’s free healthcare policy for these vulnerable groups. The dismissal was announced by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, during the launch of the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiatives Project.

Dr. Onojaeme revealed that while most health workers are performing their duties diligently, a few have been sabotaging government efforts by charging illegal fees for drugs, even when bills are submitted for government payment. The government has intensified monitoring of hospitals to curb such abuses.

The Delta government reaffirms that medical services for pregnant women until delivery, and treatment for children under five, are fully funded, urging residents to report any erring officials. Contact details for whistleblowing complaints will be made public to ensure transparency and adherence to the policy.
