Nigeria Condemns Israeli Airstrike in Qatar, Urges Restraint

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed strong concern over reports of an Israeli airstrike targeting senior Hamas figures in Doha, Qatar. The statement was issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, on Wednesday.

Nigeria emphasized the importance of respecting national sovereignty and upholding international law, cautioning that the attack could further destabilize the Middle East region.

“This incident raises profound questions about regional stability and the future of diplomatic efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” the statement noted.

The Nigerian government commended Qatar’s role as a long-standing mediator in peace negotiations and urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and recommit to peaceful dialogue.

“Nigeria calls for renewed commitment to avoid escalation, as violence only deepens mistrust and prolongs suffering,” the statement added.

Nigeria extended condolences to the victims of the airstrike and reaffirmed its commitment to international initiatives aimed at promoting de-escalation and sustainable peace. The government pledged continued cooperation with the United Nations and other multilateral organizations to uphold stability and the rule of law in the region.

The airstrike comes amid ongoing conflict since October 2023 when Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, leading to a prolonged Israeli military campaign in Gaza that has resulted in significant destruction and a humanitarian crisis.
