Key airports affected include Brussels Airport in Belgium, Berlin's Brandenburg Airport in Germany, and London's Heathrow Airport in the United Kingdom.
Brussels Airport confirmed that the attack occurred on the night of Friday, September 19, impacting their check-in and boarding systems and forcing the implementation of manual processes. The disruption affected at least nine flights which were canceled, four flights were redirected, and 15 flights were delayed by at least an hour.
Berlin Airport reported longer waiting times as it disconnected from the compromised service provider to contain the threat. Despite no cancellations, passengers faced delays at check-in and boarding.
Heathrow Airport described the issue as a technical problem with a third-party provider responsible for check-in and boarding. The airport deployed extra staff to minimize disruption and advised travelers to check flight status before arriving.
The US-based company Collins Aerospace, which supplies the affected MUSE Multi-User System Environment software across multiple airports worldwide, acknowledged the cyber-related disruption. The company stated that manual check-in and baggage procedures still operate and they are actively working to resolve the issue promptly.
This cyberattack underscores the vulnerability of digital infrastructure at critical transport hubs and raised concerns about cybersecurity in the aviation sector, impacting thousands of passengers across Europe.
