Nigerians Condemn Taye Currency’s Song at Oba Rashidi Ladoja’s Coronation

The performance of popular Fuji musician Taye Currency at the coronation ceremony of Oba Rashidi Ladoja as Olubadan of Ibadanland has sparked widespread condemnation from Nigerians on social media. The controversy centers around his lyrics “were la fi n wo were,” which translate roughly as “we used madness to cure madness,” a phrase many deemed inappropriate and disrespectful for the solemn royal occasion.

The coronation, attended by prominent figures including President Bola Tinubu and Governor Seyi Makinde, was intended to celebrate cultural heritage and unity. However, Taye Currency’s choice of song lyrics overshadowed the event for many, with critics calling it an embarrassment to the people of Ibadan. Some questioned the organizers' decision to feature him over other renowned Fuji musicians such as Saheed Osupa or King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall (K1), who they felt would have delivered a more dignified performance.

Ogun monarch Oba Adetokunbo Tejuosho also voiced strong disapproval, labeling the performance as "disgusting and uncultured," urging organizers to be more discerning in future cultural ceremonies.

The backlash on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) included calls for respect towards traditional institutions and criticism of Taye Currency’s perceived lack of cultural sensitivity.
