Electricity Supply on Nigeria’s National Grid Drops Amid Power Minister Adelabu’s Oyo Governorship Interest

Electricity available on Nigeria’s national grid has dropped to 5,128.50 megawatts as of October 2025, marking a 12.32 percent decrease from the peak generation of 5,801.84 megawatts recorded earlier this year. This decline further highlights the ongoing challenges in delivering consistent power supply to millions of Nigerians nationwide.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) reported the drop in grid performance, with power supply remaining insufficient to meet national demand despite government efforts. This situation underscores the epileptic nature of electricity distribution, which continues to weigh heavily on households and businesses.

The drop in power availability coincides with Nigerian Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu’s recent announcement of his intention to contest in the 2027 Oyo State governorship election. While the minister has acknowledged the grid's persistent lapses, he reassures stakeholders of his commitment to reforms aimed at stabilizing the sector.

Under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, sweeping reforms—such as the Light Up Nigeria project are underway to improve infrastructure and enhance service delivery, particularly in industrial clusters. However, the power sector still grapples with equipment failures and outdated infrastructure, which contribute to frequent outages and grid collapses.

Adelabu’s dual focus on governance aspirational politics and power sector reforms reflects the complexities within Nigeria’s energy landscape, where urgent improvements remain crucial to economic growth and energy security.
