Israel and Hamas Sign Off on Phase 1 of Gaza Peace Plan, Trump Announces

Israel and Hamas have officially agreed to the first phase of a peace initiative aimed at ending the devastating two-year conflict in Gaza. US President Donald Trump announced on October 8, 2025, via his social media platform that both parties approved the initial step of his 20-point peace plan, signaling a major breakthrough in efforts to bring stability to the region.

The agreement includes the imminent release of all hostages held by Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli troops to a mutually agreed line, marking the beginning of a ceasefire and the path to a “strong, lasting, and enduring peace,” according to Trump. He expressed gratitude to mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey who facilitated the indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas representatives in Egypt.

Under the deal, Hamas is expected to release approximately 48 Israeli hostages, with fewer than half presumed alive, while Israel will begin withdrawing some forces from Gaza and consider releasing thousands of Palestinian prisoners. This initial phase is seen as a foundation for further progress, including Hamas's future disarmament and governance role issues still under negotiation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the day as “great,” expressing hope that all hostages would be brought home soon. Hamas has called on the United States and other guarantor nations to ensure Israel’s full compliance with the agreement’s stipulations.

The peace deal follows several failed ceasefires and ongoing violence that has left tens of thousands dead, primarily Palestinians, and devastated Gaza's infrastructure. The announcement has sparked cautious optimism internationally, with hopes the agreement will mark the start of a lasting resolution to the conflict.

President Trump indicated his readiness to visit the Middle East soon to help solidify the peace process. While critical details remain unresolved, the first phase agreement represents significant progress after months of bitter fighting and diplomatic efforts.
