Lagos Government Justifies Trade Fair Complex Demolition, Cites Similar Actions by Otti and Soludo

The Lagos State Government has defended its recent demolition exercise at the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo, explaining that the action was necessary to remove illegal and unsafe structures built without statutory approvals. The government insists the exercise is strictly a technical enforcement of urban planning laws, dismissing claims of ethnic targeting.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Olumide Otuyinka, highlighted that similar demolitions had been carried out by Governor Alex Otti in Abia State and Governor Charles Soludo in Anambra State, emphasizing that enforcing planning regulations transcends politics or ethnicity.

The government clarified that several structures at the Trade Fair Complex were constructed on road setbacks and drainage channels, compromising public safety and urban development standards. Defaulters were given ample notice to regularize their structures, but the lack of compliance necessitated the enforcement action.

While some traders and politicians, including Senator Victor Umeh, have criticized the demolition as unlawful and harmful to the business community, Lagos officials maintain the operation was lawful and essential for restoring order and safety in the area.
