Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The governor made the announcement on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, during a state-wide broadcast, ending weeks of speculation about his political intentions.
Governor Mbah explained that his decision to join the APC was driven by a desire to better serve the people of Enugu and to align the state with the federal government's development agenda. He expressed confidence that the APC platform would provide greater opportunities for collaboration, progress, and effective delivery of governance.
“I am committed to advancing the state’s interests, and I believe the APC provides a more conducive platform to achieve these objectives,” Mbah stated. He also expressed sincere gratitude to the PDP, acknowledging the support the party gave during his campaign and administration thus far.
The defection also saw several other political figures from Enugu’s government, including House of Assembly members, local government chairmen, and commissioners, joining the APC alongside the governor. This mass movement signals a significant political realignment in the South-East region.
The shift follows similar high-profile defections earlier in the year, including governors from Bayelsa, Delta, and Akwa Ibom states, who moved from opposition parties to the APC, consolidating the ruling party’s influence.
Governor Mbah’s move is viewed as strategic to harness the benefits of closer collaboration with the presidency under President Bola Tinubu, whose policies have been praised by the governor for supporting Enugu State’s development.
Political analysts suggest that this defection could reshape the political landscape in Enugu State ahead of the 2027 general elections, strengthening the APC’s foothold in the South-East.
