Udenta Slams Governors’ Defections from PDP as ‘Cowardly and Gutless’

Innocent Udenta, former spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has criticized the recent wave of defections by governors from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). In a strong statement released on October 14, 2025, Udenta described the defections as "cowardly" and "gutless," accusing the defectors of abandoning their party at critical moments.

Addressing the political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, Udenta expressed disappointment over how the defections have weakened the PDP’s chances and undermined party unity. "Leaders who claim to stand for the people but abandon their party during times of challenge show a lack of political courage and integrity," he said.

Udenta argued that the defections were driven by personal interests rather than commitment to democratic ideals or constituents' welfare. He urged the defecting governors to reconsider and remain within the PDP to help resolve internal issues instead of seeking refuge with the ruling party.

The defection of prominent figures, including Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, has fueled political debates about loyalty and the future direction of Nigeria’s major political parties. Defectors often cite alignment with federal policies and access to development projects as reasons for switching parties.

However, Udenta dismissed these rationales, saying that true political leadership entails staying and fighting for one's beliefs despite difficulties. He called on PDP members to rally and strengthen the party base to reclaim political ground in upcoming elections.

Udenta’s remarks emphasize the tension within Nigeria’s political landscape, highlighting the challenges party defections pose to democratic stability and governance.
