Nigerian-American Nwachinemere Kalu-Agba Re-elected Deputy Mayor of Orangeburg, South Carolina

Nigerian-born public official Nwachinemere Kalu-Agba has been re-elected as the Deputy Mayor (Mayor Pro Tem) of the City of Orangeburg, South Carolina, United States, securing another two-year term that will run through 2027. His re-election was officially announced on Sunday via a congratulatory Facebook post by Peter Agba Kalu, urging the public to celebrate the achievement.

Kalu-Agba, who also serves as a City Council representative for his district, previously held the Deputy Mayor position before stepping down due to a new South Carolina state law. This law mandates a two-year tenure for the Mayor Pro Tem role, after which a new official must be elected. It also prohibits immediate re-election until after another cycle, though it allows former holders like Kalu-Agba to contest again if they choose.

He returned to the Deputy Mayor position after his successor's tenure expired and will continue to serve concurrently as both Deputy Mayor and council member. His current four-year city council mandate is expected to lapse in 2027, when he may decide whether to seek re-election again.

Kalu-Agba’s re-election signifies confidence in his leadership and ongoing commitment to serving the Orangeburg community, reflecting the growing influence of Nigerian-Americans in U.S. local governance. His dual roles enable him to contribute significantly to city leadership and policy-making.
