Tinubu Unveils ₦58.47 Trillion 2026 Budget with Massive Defence Boost

Bola Tinubu presented Nigeria's 2026 Appropriation Bill totaling ₦58.47 trillion to the National Assembly, prioritizing security with ₦5.41 trillion for defence amid ongoing banditry and terrorism threats.

Capital expenditure leads at ₦26.08 trillion, supporting infrastructure (₦3.56 trillion), education (₦3.52 trillion), and health (₦2.48 trillion), while recurrent non-debt spending hits ₦15.25 trillion. Debt servicing consumes ₦15.52 trillion, with projected revenue of ₦34.33 trillion against a ₦17.88 trillion borrowing plan, based on $64.85 oil benchmark, 1.84 million barrels daily production, and ₦1,400/$ exchange rate.

Defence claims the largest slice for modernizing forces, intelligence policing, border surveillance, and joint operations, reclassifying all non-state armed groups as terrorists including their enablers. Tinubu stressed security as development's foundation, vowing accountability to deliver results and restore public confidence.

The "Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity" targets 4.68% GDP growth and 16.5% inflation, emphasizing fiscal sustainability, tax reforms, and value-for-money amid public finance pressures.
