Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has given final approval for the appointment of Professor Mohammed Bashir Tahir as the new substantive Vice-Chancellor of Yobe State University, Damaturu.
The decision follows a recommendation from the university's Governing Council during an extraordinary meeting held on January 15, 2026. The announcement came via an official statement from the Chairman of the Governing Council, Alhaji Ahmed Mustapha Goniri.
Professor Mohammed Bashir Tahir is a distinguished Professor of General Surgery and a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Medical Director of the Ultra-Modern Police Hospital in Damaturu, bringing extensive experience in medical administration and academic leadership to the role.
In a parallel development from the same council meeting, the Governing Council approved the appointment of Mallam Isa Audu Dallari as the substantive Registrar of the university. Mallam Dallari, who currently holds the position of Director of Administration at Yobe State University, was recommended by the Selection Committee in line with the provisions of the Yobe State University Law, 2006 (as amended).
These appointments mark a significant step in strengthening the administrative and academic leadership of the state-owned institution, which was established in 2006 and continues to play a key role in higher education in Yobe State and the North East region.
The new leadership team is expected to assume their positions soon, building on the foundation laid by previous administrations to advance teaching, research, and community service at the university.
As Yobe State University enters this new chapter, stakeholders, students, and staff are optimistic about enhanced governance, improved academic standards, and greater contributions to national development. The appointments have already generated positive reactions across academic circles in the state.
