Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has been named the recipient of the prestigious 2025 Sunhak Peace Prize in recognition of his contributions to democracy, peacebuilding, and conflict resolution in Africa.
The Sunhak Peace Prize Committee announced the award on Monday, praising Jonathan’s "exceptional leadership in promoting peaceful transitions of power and strengthening democratic values" across the continent. The award specifically highlighted his historic concession of defeat in the 2015 presidential election, a move that helped stabilize Nigeria and set a democratic example for Africa.
A Legacy of Peace and Democracy
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, has remained active in global peace initiatives since leaving office. He has mediated political crises in Mali, The Gambia, and Kenya, working with organizations like the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).
The Sunhak Peace Prize, founded by Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon, is awarded biennially to individuals or organizations making significant contributions to peace and human development. Jonathan will share the $1 million prize with another laureate to be announced later.
Reactions and Celebrations
Nigerian leaders and international figures have congratulated Jonathan on the honor. President Bola Tinubu described the award as "a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to democracy and stability." Similarly, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) commended Jonathan’s role in conflict resolution across West Africa.
Jonathan expressed gratitude, stating:
"This award is not just for me but for all Nigerians and Africans who believe in peace, justice, and democracy. We must continue to uphold these values for future generations."
The formal award ceremony will take place in Seoul, South Korea, in August 2025.
