On March 26, 2025, the Nigerian House of Representatives progressed a bill through its second reading that seeks to eliminate the constitutional immunity currently granted to the Vice President, state governors, and their deputies.
This legislative move is designed to enhance accountability, combat corruption, and eliminate impunity within public offices.
In addition to this bill, the House deliberated on 39 other constitutional amendment proposals. Among these is a bill aiming to separate the roles of the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, as well as those of state Attorneys-General and Commissioners for Justice.
This proposed separation intends to delineate legal advisory functions from political responsibilities, thereby promoting greater independence and objectivity in legal proceedings.
These legislative efforts reflect a concerted push by the House of Representatives to reform governance structures, with the overarching goal of fostering transparency and strengthening democratic institutions in Nigeria.
