Lagos Police Arraign Driver Over Death of Bumpa Co-Founder Teejay Opayele

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned Biola Adams-Odutayo in connection with the death of Adetunji "Teejay" Opayele, co-founder of Nigerian tech startup Bumpa. The 32-year-old software engineer died in a March 4 accident on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island, while riding his power bike, which was allegedly struck by Adams-Odutayo's vehicle.

Public outrage grew after a Change.org petition accused Adams-Odutayo, a healthcare professional, of refusing to assist the critically injured Opayele due to concerns about bloodstains in her car. The petition, signed by over 35,000 Nigerians, demanded justice and alleged negligence in the case.

Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed Adams-Odutayo was arraigned on March 12 in Court 1, Tinubu, on charges of reckless driving causing death. She was granted bail, with the case adjourned to April 16 45. Hundeyin stated: "The Lagos State Police Command remains committed to transparency, fairness, and justice".

Critics argue the reckless driving charge is inadequate, calling for manslaughter charges amid allegations of preferential treatment 610. The case highlights ongoing concerns about road safety and justice system accountability in Nigeria .
