Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has issued a stern warning to traditional rulers in the conflict-prone communities of Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin-Osun, threatening to dethrone any monarch under whose domain violence recurs.

The governor’s ultimatum follows reports of planned fresh attacks during the recent Sallah celebrations, despite a temporary relaxation of the 24-hour curfew imposed in March after clashes claimed lives and destroyed properties worth millions of naira.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke revealed that security agencies had intercepted intelligence about groups plotting renewed violence in the three towns. He emphasized that the relaxed curfew initially eased on humanitarian grounds would be fully reinstated if hostilities resume, stressing that traditional leaders would bear responsibility for any breakdown of peace. "Royal fathers must call their subjects to order. I will wield the big stick. Enough is enough," Adeleke declared, referencing signed peace agreements that community leaders had previously endorsed.

The governor’s threat underscores his administration’s frustration with the cyclical violence, which has defied multiple interventions. Security agencies have intensified surveillance and are interrogating key figures suspected of fueling the crisis. Adeleke’s hardline stance mirrors his 2022 decision to dethrone three monarchs appointed by his predecessor, Adegboyega Oyetola, over procedural irregularities a move that sparked legal battles.

Residents have been urged to report suspicious activities, while the state government reaffirmed its commitment to prosecuting violators. Analysts note the governor’s approach risks further alienating traditional institutions but may be necessary to quell the unrest ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

Context:

- The Ifon-Ilobu-Erin-Osun conflict stems from longstanding land and chieftaincy disputes.

- Adeleke’s 2022 dethronements targeted the Akirun of Ikirun, Aree of Iree, and Owa of Igbajo .

- Curfew violations could trigger a state of emergency in the affected areas .
