Suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has assured residents that the ongoing political crisis in the state will ultimately strengthen the people rather than weaken them, framing the turmoil as part of a divine plan for a greater purpose. Fubara made the declaration during a meeting with Muslim leaders from 20 Islamic groups, including the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, at his private residence in Port Harcourt as part of Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
Addressing the delegation, Fubara urged his supporters to remain steadfast, emphasizing faith in God’s process. "This season is one of love, sharing, and sacrifice. You have come to share in our pain and have made a great sacrifice through your prayers. As Christians, we believe that everything happens for a purpose, and I strongly believe that this situation is leading us toward a greater purpose," he said . He acknowledged the hardship caused by the crisis but suggested that supernatural forces may be at play beyond human understanding, urging patience and perseverance with a biblical analogy: "If God could be patient with Noah to allow even the snail to enter the Ark, then patience remains an essential virtue in our struggle".
Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to justice and egalitarianism, vowing to resist oppression. "We believe in egalitarianism, and if our beliefs bring us some pain, so be it. The most important thing is that we stand on the side of truth and righteousness," he stated, while cautioning against provocations by those seeking to destabilize the state . He also apologized for not formally engaging the Muslim community earlier during their celebrations, promising to strengthen interfaith ties once the crisis subsides.
Speaking on behalf of the Muslim leaders, Alhaji Nasir Awhelebe Uhor expressed solidarity with Fubara, praising his inclusive governance compared to the previous administration’s declaration of Rivers as a "100% Christian state." Uhor called on President Bola Tinubu to review the emergency rule imposed on Rivers and restore Fubara’s full authority, noting the governor’s effective leadership despite the turmoil.
The crisis, rooted in a power struggle with Fubara’s predecessor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has seen the suspension of elected officials and the appointment of an interim administrator under emergency rule. Fubara’s spiritual framing of the conflict aligns with his earlier remarks that the turmoil is divinely orchestrated to liberate Rivers politically and economically.
Key Context:
- Fubara’s administration faces challenges from Wike-aligned lawmakers and federal intervention.
- The governor has consistently framed the crisis as a test of faith and governance principles.
- Muslim leaders’ endorsement highlights Fubara’s cross-religious appeal amid the turmoil.
