The internal crisis within the Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a legal turn as the Abia State High Court, sitting in Obehie, Ukwa West Local Government Area, issued an interim injunction restraining the enforcement of the suspension of Senator Adolphus Wabara as the National Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT).
Presiding over the case marked HUK/8/2025, Justice L.T.C. Eruba granted the prayers of Senator Wabara, who had filed a suit against Abraham Amah, the Abia State PDP Vice Chairman and Acting Publicity Secretary. The court restrained Amah from laying claim to the Abia State chairmanship of the PDP and from enforcing the purported suspension of Wabara.
In his ruling, Justice Eruba stated, “The defendant is restrained from enforcing the suspension of the claimant/applicant from the Peoples Democratic Party, or in any way affecting his position as the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the PDP, till the motion on notice is determined.”
The suspension of Senator Wabara, announced by Abraham Amah, was reportedly based on allegations of anti-party activities. Amah accused Wabara of undermining the PDP by publicly praising the performance of Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party (LP), describing such actions as detrimental to the party’s interests.
However, the court’s decision has temporarily halted the enforcement of the suspension, pending the determination of the substantive suit. This development has further deepened the factional crisis within the Abia PDP, highlighting the growing tensions between party loyalists and the leadership.
Meanwhile, a pro-PDP group, PDP Frontiers for Change and Progress, has refuted claims made by former Abia State Commissioner for Information, John Okiyi Kalu, who alleged that Senator Wabara held a secret meeting with Governor Alex Otti in London to discuss the latter’s possible defection to the PDP.
The National Coordinator of the group, Mr. Emeka Yellow Ikpegbu, challenged Okiyi Kalu to provide concrete evidence of the alleged London meeting. In a statement, Ikpegbu dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated, aimed at further destabilizing the party.
The unfolding legal and political drama underscores the deepening divisions within the Abia PDP, as key stakeholders grapple for control and influence. With the court’s intervention, the party now faces a critical period of reckoning, as the outcome of the case could have far-reaching implications for its cohesion and electoral prospects in the state.
As the battle between Senator Wabara and the Abia PDP leadership continues, political analysts are closely monitoring the situation, noting that the crisis could further weaken the party’s position in Abia State, particularly in the face of Governor Otti’s rising popularity and the Labour Party’s growing influence in the region.
For now, the court’s injunction has provided Senator Wabara with a temporary reprieve, but the legal and political battles are far from over. The Abia PDP must navigate these turbulent waters carefully if it hopes to reclaim its footing and present a united front ahead of future elections.
