Fulham defender Calvin Bassey has opened up about his decision to represent the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the international level, despite being eligible to play for Italy and England. Born in Italy to Nigerian parents and raised in England, Bassey faced a significant choice regarding his international allegiance.
The 25-year-old ultimately chose Nigeria, making his debut for the three-time African champions in 2021. In a recent interview with NBC Sports, Bassey revealed that his decision was inspired by watching Nigeria take on Lionel Messi’s Argentina at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
“I think it was just seeing the greatest player to ever play, playing against my team. [Nigeria] lost 2-1,” Bassey said. “I think one of my teammates that I played with, Kenneth Omeruo, played that game. Just watching that game, I wanted to be in that position.”
Bassey also highlighted the pride and passion associated with representing Nigeria, a nation with a rich footballing history and a massive fan base. “I know how big of a nation Nigeria is and how much pride comes with playing for them. I just worked hard. When I got the opportunity, I didn’t take time [to decide] - I just knew that I wanted to play for Nigeria,” he added.
Since making his debut, Bassey has become a key figure for the Super Eagles, earning 29 caps and playing a crucial role in the team’s journey to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, where they finished as runners-up.
Bassey’s decision to represent Nigeria has been celebrated by fans, who appreciate his commitment to the national team. His journey serves as an inspiration to young players navigating similar decisions about their international futures.
