Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has called on prominent political leaders - Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rauf Aregbesola, to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in preparation for the 2027 general elections. El-Rufai made the appeal during a public event, emphasizing the need for a united and formidable opposition to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
El-Rufai described the SDP as a platform with progressive values and inclusive policies, capable of uniting leaders who are committed to addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges. He urged Atiku, the former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and Rauf Aregbesola, a former Minister of Interior and APC stalwart, to consider aligning with the SDP to strengthen the opposition and foster national development.
The call comes amid growing discontent with the current political climate, particularly within the major political parties. El-Rufai highlighted the importance of a coalition of like-minded leaders to tackle issues such as insecurity, economic instability, and poor governance.
Atiku, Obi, and Aregbesola have not yet responded to El-Rufai’s appeal. However, political analysts believe that such a move could significantly alter Nigeria’s political landscape, especially if the SDP emerges as a credible alternative to the APC and PDP.
The proposal has generated mixed reactions, with some Nigerians welcoming the idea of a stronger opposition, while others remain doubtful about the feasibility of such a coalition.
