Fenerbahçe manager José Mourinho has had his four-match suspension halved and his fine significantly reduced following a successful appeal by the Turkish Süper Lig club.
The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss was initially handed the punishment after making remarks that were deemed “racist” and derogatory toward Turkish referees and football.
The controversy stemmed from Mourinho’s post-match comments following Fenerbahçe’s 0-0 draw with Galatasaray on Monday. Although the match was officiated by Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić, Mourinho used the press conference to criticize Turkish referees, leading to accusations of disrespect and racism.
As a result, Mourinho was handed a four-match suspension and fined ₺1.6 million (£35,000). However, after Fenerbahçe appealed the decision, the Turkish Football Federation reduced the suspension to two matches and lowered the fine to ₺558,000 (£12,200).
Mourinho has already served one match of his suspension, missing Fenerbahçe’s Turkish Cup game. He will also miss Sunday’s Süper Lig clash against Antalyaspor as part of the reduced ban.
The reduction in Mourinho’s punishment comes as a relief for Fenerbahçe, who are currently second in the Süper Lig, six points behind league leaders Galatasaray. The club will be hoping to close the gap in the title race once Mourinho returns to the touchline.
