The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has joined the growing chorus of condemnation over the brutal killing of 16 northern travelers in Uromi, Edo State, demanding an impartial investigation to uncover the truth behind the horrific incident. The group’s call comes amid escalating ethnic tensions and fears of reprisal attacks following the lynching of the victims, who were mistaken for kidnappers by local vigilantes .
In a statement released by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze described the killings as "barbaric and unacceptable," emphasizing that jungle justice has no place in a civilized society. The organization urged the federal and Edo State governments to ensure that those responsible are swiftly prosecuted to serve as a deterrent against future mob violence .
“The Uromi massacre is a tragic reminder of the dangers of ethnic profiling and the breakdown of law and order,” Isiguzoro said. “We must not allow this incident to further divide our nation. Instead, it should reinforce our collective commitment to justice and peaceful coexistence” .
Ohanaeze also extended condolences to the families of the victims, many of whom were hunters returning to Kano for Sallah celebrations. The group highlighted the need for improved inter-ethnic dialogue and stronger security measures to prevent similar tragedies, warning that unchecked vigilantism could spiral into wider communal conflicts .
The statement further called on community leaders across Nigeria to educate their people on the dangers of extrajudicial actions and to promote trust between ethnic groups. Ohanaeze’s appeal aligns with similar demands from Arewa groups, Amnesty International, and political leaders, including President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who have all condemned the killings and demanded accountability .
As investigations continue, with four suspects already arrested, Ohanaeze urged the government to address the root causes of such violence, including poverty, misinformation, and inadequate policing. The organization pledged to work with other regional bodies to foster national unity and ensure that the victims’ deaths are not in vain .
The Edo State Police Command has yet to release additional details on the probe, but authorities assure the public that justice will be served .
