Niger Delta youths have raised concerns over the political strategies of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), describing his approach as “toxic” and a potential threat to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. The youths, under the aegis of the Niger Delta Youth Council (NDYC), issued the warning during a press conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The group accused Wike of engaging in divisive politics that could alienate key stakeholders and voters in the Niger Delta region, a critical support base for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). “Wike’s toxic politics is creating unnecessary tension and could jeopardize President Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 elections,” said NDYC spokesperson, Comrade Tari Oki.
The youths urged President Tinubu to distance himself from Wike’s controversial tactics and focus on uniting the party ahead of the next general elections. They also called for greater inclusion of Niger Delta leaders in the APC’s decision-making processes to ensure the region’s interests are adequately represented.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and a prominent figure in the APC, has been at the center of several political controversies since his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His recent actions, including public clashes with political opponents, have drawn criticism from within and outside the party.
The NDYC’s warning comes amid growing concerns about the APC’s internal cohesion and its ability to retain power in 2027. Political analysts suggest that the party must address these issues and foster unity to maintain its dominance in Nigerian politics.
As the 2027 elections approach, stakeholders are closely monitoring the political landscape, with calls for President Tinubu to prioritize reconciliation and strategic alliances to secure his re-election.
