A young boy who gained prominence for standing in front of Peter Obi's campaign convoy during the 2023 general election is reportedly being held in Kirikiri Prison in Lagos State.
According to reports, the boy was arrested in his neighborhood while returning from work and accused of theft and street fighting. Supporters and eyewitnesses claim these accusations are false.
An X user, @Hausa\_girl, brought the case to public attention, stating that she had spoken with the boy's mother and attended his court hearing on March 27. The case has been adjourned until April 28, pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Supporters believe the boy is a victim of public perception, stemming from the financial gifts he received during the election season, leading to accusations of entitlement.
Nigerian human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has called for the boy's immediate release, citing his apparent innocence. Sowore has requested contact information for the boy's lawyers or family to facilitate rescue efforts.
The boy is currently facing charges of stealing and public fighting. A commentator stated that the boy knows the identities of those who took him to the police station, including one who allegedly stole his phone. Efforts are underway to provide legal assistance, with plans to consult with Inibehe Effiong and visit the correctional center to gather more information.
