The Bayelsa State High Court has ordered a fast-tracked trial for 15 former domestic workers of ex-First Lady Patience Jonathan, who have been held in detention for nearly six years over allegations of stealing jewellery and other valuables from her residence.
The accused, arrested in 2019 and held at the Okaka Correctional Centre in Yenagoa, have faced numerous delays in their trial, which has been marred by repeated adjournments and alleged manipulation of court processes, reportedly by Mrs. Jonathan’s private legal team.
The 15 detainees, including Williams Alami, Vincent Olabiyi, Ebuka Cosmos, and others, were charged with burglary, theft of items valued at around N200 million including seven gold bangles, jewellery, Samsung air conditioners, upholstery chairs, and flat-screen televisions as well as conspiracy to commit murder and armed robbery among 18 counts.
Despite the gravity of the charges, no conviction has been secured, and the prolonged detention without bail has drawn criticism from the Nigerian Bar Association, which has engaged Mrs. Jonathan to resolve the matter.
Families of the accused have decried the maltreatment and the undue hardship caused by the delayed trial, calling for their release or at least a speedy conclusion of the case. They allege that Mrs. Jonathan has not appeared in court since the trial began and accuse her of using her influence to frustrate the proceedings.
The Bayelsa State High Court recently dismissed claims that the judicial system or Mrs. Jonathan was deliberately delaying the trial, attributing delays to multiple defense lawyers and adjournments requested by counsel. However, the court has now agreed to accelerate the hearing following a consensus between prosecution and defense, raising hopes for a swift resolution.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about justice delays and the treatment of accused persons in Nigeria’s legal system, especially when powerful individuals are involved. The fast-tracked trial order marks a significant development after years of stagnation in this high-profile case.
