Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), recently met with the suspended members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for a dinner in the United Kingdom (UK).
The meeting, disclosed by Wike's media aide Lere Olayinka on Facebook, follows Wike's earlier gathering with political allies in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Sunday. Olayinka stated that the Rivers State House of Assembly members were in the UK for legislative capacity building.
This comes after President Bola Tinubu's earlier decision to suspend the lawmakers after declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State due to security concerns arising from the ongoing political crisis between Wike and Governor Sim Fubara. Governor Fubara was also suspended for six months.
The Supreme Court later intervened, ordering the reinstatement of the lawmakers and directing Governor Fubara to present the 2024 budget before the Martins Amaewhule-led Assembly. However, Fubara's attempt to present the budget was unsuccessful, as the lawmakers denied him access to the Assembly complex. The suspended lawmakers are currently in the UK for a legislative capacity-building programme.
