Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Customs Board Chairman, Wale Edun, has commended the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for its impressive revenue collection of ₦1.75 trillion in the first quarter of 2025, surpassing the quarterly target by ₦106.5 billion. Speaking at the 62nd regular meeting of the NCS Board on April 29, 2025, in Abuja, Edun praised the service’s progress but emphasized the need for even greater efforts to meet Nigeria’s growing economic demands.
Edun acknowledged the NCS’s role as a pivotal revenue-generating institution and highlighted that while the current performance is commendable, “much more is required, and more is expected” from the agency. He stressed the importance of maintaining strong corporate governance, transparency, and accountability within the customs service to sustain and enhance its operations.
The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, had earlier reported that the ₦1.75 trillion revenue collected represented a 29.96% increase compared to the same period in 2024 and exceeded the proportional quarterly benchmark by 6.47%. This achievement reflects reforms initiated under President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the strategic leadership of Minister Edun.
Edun described the recent board meeting as productive, reaffirming the commitment to open governance and consultation. He urged the Nigeria Customs Service to continue modernizing its processes, strengthening enforcement, and expanding partnerships to further boost revenue collection and support Nigeria’s economic development.
The Finance Minister’s call to action underscores the critical role of the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving the government’s ambitious revenue targets and sustaining fiscal stability amid ongoing economic challenges.
