IGP Kayode Egbetokun Deploys Special Anti-Bandit Squads Nationwide to Tackle Rising Violence

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of special anti-bandit squads across Nigeria in response to escalating violence and deadly attacks in several states. The directive came during a meeting with Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadron Commanders in Abuja on Tuesday, following recent bandit attacks in Kwara, Benue, and Sokoto States that claimed 21 lives.

Egbetokun instructed all PMF squadrons to maintain at least one fully equipped, combat-ready unit on constant standby, effective immediately. These units are to provide rapid tactical support to state commands during crises, high-risk operations, or emergency situations.

“The PMF was created as a strike force – to be swift, decisive and combat-ready. Effective immediately, all PMF squadrons are directed to maintain at least one fully equipped, combat-ready unit on standby at all times,” the IGP said.

He also announced plans to review and reduce squadron sizes to enhance operational effectiveness and agility. Commanders will be held accountable for the discipline and conduct of their personnel, with an emphasis on ethics, professionalism, and respect for human rights through regular training and inspections.

The IGP reaffirmed the withdrawal of mobile policemen from non-core duties such as escort services to refocus the force on combating violent crimes and safeguarding national security.

Recent attacks include a deadly assault on a relaxation spot in Ilesha Baruba, Kwara State, where six people were killed, and ongoing violence in other northern states. Authorities have intensified tactical operations and arrested informants linked to bandit networks.

The rising insecurity has prompted regional cooperation, with the Northern States Governors’ Forum spearheading joint efforts to address banditry and terrorism.

This robust response aims to restore peace and security, reassuring Nigerians that the police force is committed to confronting armed threats with integrity and courage.
