NIMC Cautions Nigerians Against Selling Their NINs

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has cautioned Nigerians against disclosing their National Identification Numbers (NIN) to unauthorized individuals or organizations in exchange for monetary compensation. This warning comes in response to reports of illicit activities in Anambra State, where some residents were being enticed to submit their NINs for financial reward.

NIMC Head of Corporate Communications, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, issued a statement asserting that such practices are illegal and punishable under the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, the Data Protection Act, and the Cybercrime Act. The NIMC said it was notified of the actions of these unscrupulous individuals and has taken swift action to address the issue.

In collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), NIMC has arrested the individuals involved in the scheme. The culprits are currently undergoing interrogation and will face the full force of the law, according to the commission.
